Range of motion, strength and special tests

Recording range of motion against typical ranges, strength on the Oxford scale and special tests on a note, and following them over time.

Range of motion

On a clinical note, press Range of motion. Choose a joint and a side (or both) and press Add: each of its movements gets a row. Type the active and passive range in degrees; use a minus figure for an extension lag (knee extension −10 means it lacks 10° of straightening). Tick Painful if the movement hurt.

Beside each movement is its typical range as a guide, and how your figure compares ("35° short of typical"), plus the figure from the patient's last measurement. The typical ranges are adult ranges from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, as reproduced in Norkin and White's Measurement of Joint Motion. They're a guide only: range varies with age, sex, build and how it's measured. Press Save range of motion.

Movements measured on two or more visits are charted on the patient's Body chart and MSK page: active as a solid line, passive dashed, with the typical range shaded.

Strength

Press Strength (Oxford scale), add the muscle groups you tested and choose a grade for the left and right: 0 no contraction, 1 a flicker, 2 movement with gravity eliminated, 3 against gravity, 4 against some resistance, 5 normal power. Only whole grades 0 to 5 can be recorded. Press Save strength.

Special tests

Press Special tests, choose an area (shoulder, knee, lumbar spine and so on) and tap Positive or Negative for each side you tested. Tests you don't tap aren't recorded. Press Save special tests.

The list includes common tests such as Hawkins–Kennedy, Neer's, Lachman's, McMurray's, the straight leg raise, slump and FABER. Owners and managers can untick tests the clinic doesn't use and add their own in Forms & exercises → Clinical tools. A test already recorded on a note keeps its name if it's taken off the list later.

Signing and who sees it

Like the body chart: saved with the note, locked when it's signed, for clinicians and the owner only, encrypted and every view logged.
